HOST AN ARTIST
As we prepare for our 60th year, we’re reaching out to our local community to help revive an important Festival tradition: artist billeting. For many years, billeting (where local hosts provide accomodation for travelling artists) has been a significant part of how we’ve welcomed artists to the Festival, creating genuine connections between visiting performers and the community that surrounds them. We’re now beginning to set this up again and would love your help.
If you might be able to host an artist, please read on below for more information and to register.
COULD YOU BE A HOST?
What is billeting?
Billeting is when Festival artists stay in the homes or properties of local hosts during the Festival. The best-suited options are:
-
an empty house or apartment
-
a self-contained granny flat or studio
-
or private rooms in a lived-in home, where hosts are present
Our priority is that the accommodation feels comfortable, calm and genuinely welcoming. We’re aiming for a positive experience for both artists and hosts, so we’re seeking spaces that are well-maintained, quiet, clean and thoughtfully set up — more than just “basic” accommodation.
Location and transport
Billets need to be reasonably close to the Festival site, or have reliable public transport access. We’ll work with you to assess what’s suitable and make thoughtful matches.
What’s expected of hosts?
We’re looking for spaces where artists will feel cared for, respected and at ease. Our minimum requirements are:
-
A clean, private sleeping space with a proper bed and fresh bedding
-
Access to bathroom facilities
-
A comfortable environment where artists can rest between performances
-
Clear communication around arrival times, length of stay and house expectations
-
Light hospitality and local guidance are welcome, but not required
How it works:
-
You register your interest as a billet host
-
Our team matches artists with hosts based on space, access and needs
-
Artists stay for the agreed period during the Festival
-
We remain the point of contact if questions arise
What you receive:
-
Complimentary Festival pass/es (details depend on the accommodation offered)
-
The opportunity to meet artists and be part of their Festival experience
-
A meaningful way to contribute to the Festival’s 60th year
-
The satisfaction of supporting artists and sustaining a long-standing Festival tradition
Billeting has always been about more than accommodation, it’s about generosity, connection and shared care. If you have a suitable space and would like to be involved, we’d love to hear from you.
