MCs
During Festival
The MC Team plays a vital role in creating a welcoming, inclusive and engaging atmosphere across the Festival. MCs are an important link between artists, audiences, Venue Managers, technical crews, and the Festival leadership.
Our MCs create anticipation and connection while keeping the spotlight on the artists. They know when to bring energy to a room, when to encourage participation and, importantly, when to step back. A great MC provides a voice for the Festival without drawing focus away from the artists the Festival is about.
From the stage(s) they welcome audiences, introduce artists professionally and accurately, communicate important Festival information, help manage changeovers and unexpected delays, and support the smooth running of the program. Backstage they make the artists feel welcomed, respected, informed and confident as they step onto the stage.
Who
A specialised volunteer team, MCs need excellent communication skills, good judgement, confidence in public speaking, and the ability to connect with audiences of all sizes. The National brings together artists and audiences from many different cultures, generations, identities, abilities, traditions and communities.
While our MCs are expected to familiarise themselves with the artists and events they are presenting, be familiar with the supplied information and do their own research; we also expect that they will be open-minded, curious and proactive in checking anything they're uncertain about. If you don't know, ask.
Experience is valuable, but we're also interested in people with strong communication and presentation skills who may not have formally MC'd before.
When
The MCs team operates during the Festival, from the 25th to 29th March. The operational hours for MCs varies depending on the venue, but is generally between 10am-11pm. Volunteers for this team are required to complete 20 hours of work.
How
All volunteers must complete the online safety induction as part of their application. Some teams require additional training or briefings before the Festival. If this applies to your role, your Team Coordinator will advise you. Volunteers should also read any role-specific information or guides provided by their Coordinator.
